Harriett Joan Bogaards, 84, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, May 25, 2019, at Crystal Heights Care Center. She was born Monday, August 13, 1934 at Grinnell, the daughter of Harry and Juanita Evans Gilbert. She graduated from Newton High School with the class of 1952. Following high school, she attended the American Institute of Business and studied Business Machines and Office Protocol. During her summers, she attended he Iowa State Teachers College and the University of Iowa for Library courses. Harriett worked for the Newton Library from 1949 to 1953. In 1954, she went to work as the Jasper County Assistant Librarian until 1960, when she was promoted to Librarian. She left Jasper County in 1964, to work for Oskaloosa Public Library as the Children's Librarian until 1976. Harriett was a member of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women from 1952-1976. Harriett served as the President of Newton and Oskaloosa Clubs and the District #5 Secretary and Treasurer from 1974-1976. She was united in marriage to Lawrence Bogaards, August 4, 1976, at Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton, Iowa. Lawrence died February 15, 2017. Following their marriage, together they farmed until retiring in 1996. In retirement, they enjoyed traveling and went on many bus trips. Harriett was a very organized person who loved the Lord and spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed corresponding with people through cards and letters.
Harriett was a member of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women from 1952-1976. Harriett served as the President of Newton and Oskaloosa Clubs and the District #5 Secretary and Treasurer from 1974-1976. She was a member of the American Librarian Association and Iowa Library Association, while serving the position of Extension Secretary from 1962-1964, and Delta Kappa Gamma. She joined as a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in 1976 and served as the church librarian for 25 years. In 2010, they became members of Central Reformed Church.
Her family includes her three step-sons, Arvin (Grace) Bogaards of Fairfield, Mark (Julie) Bogaards of Tomball, Texas, and Bruce (Janice) Bogaards of Altoona; six grandchildren, Jeff (Carly) Bogaards, Luke (Chelsey) Bogaards, Laura (Bob) Heath, Rebecca (James) Kleveland, Kelsey Bogaards, and Bryan Bogaards; ten great grandchildren; her brother, Johnny (Linda) Gilbert of Rocky Mount, NC; and two brother in laws, Robert Terlouw of Grinnell and John Potter of Newton.
Harriett was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; her parents; and two sisters, Ella Mae Terlouw and Doris Potter.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 3, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. in the Central Reformed Church with Reverend Jon Nelson officiating. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 Monday morning in the east lounge of the church. Burial will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery in Leighton. A procession will form at 1 p.m. on Monday afternoon for those wishing to attend the service at the cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will begin Sunday, June 2, 2019 after 11:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the chapel on Sunday afternoon from 1-4 to greet friends and relatives.
