Virjean L. Van Hulzen
Virjean was born August 31, 1936, in Wheatland, Iowa, the daughter of Lester and Bernadine Knoche Lund. She graduated from Wheatland High School with the class of 1955. She attended Iowa State University studying Home Economics where she met the love of her life Kenneth Van Hulzen. Ken and Virjean were married on June 7, 1958, in Wheatland, Iowa.
Virjean helped on Ken's family farm near Rose Hill for 10 years tending to livestock and working in town at the local Sears store before moving to Oskaloosa in 1968. She helped Ken in the oil business by running the West End Phillips 66 gas station and carwash. Later she loved working as a librarian at Lincoln Elementary School and interacting with the children for 10 years. She had a very strong work ethic, most days starting before sunrise and ending after dark when things still needed to be done.
Virjean was active in the community. She was a long-time member of the First Christian Church, serving as Deaconess, youth leader, helping prepare meals for the Pioneer Club, and using her gift of music to sing in the choir for over 40 years.
She and Ken loved to travel either with church friends, vacationing with the family (especially the annual Ozark trip), or traveling by themselves to Alaska over a three-month period. She enjoyed company and friends by hosting gatherings at their home after high school football games, church events, Sunday dinners, and holidays with family.
She loved her family and attended all her children's and as many of her grandchildren's sporting and musical events as she could. She was a devoted Iowa State University Cyclone fan. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, as shown by her actions. She provided an example for her family and others how to live despite difficult circumstances, never complaining.
Virjean is survived by her four children and their spouses, Kendra and Mike Slycord of Oskaloosa, Kraig and Jana Van Hulzen of Oskaloosa, Kurt and Teresa Van Hulzen of Sac City, Iowa, and Kara and Scott Touro of Louisville, Kentucky; ten grandchildren, Kayla (Brock) Martin, Kristelle (Brooks) VanDerBeek, Kamron and Kourtney Van Hulzen, Andrew, Sarah and Joshua Van Hulzen, and Nathan, Mitchell, and Makenna Touro; one great granddaughter, Kora Martin, and one on the way; her sister, Verlee (Rollie) Reiling of Wheatland; a brother and sister in laws, Bill (Retha) Van Hulzen of Zion, Illinois, Don (Joan) Van Hulzen of Iowa City, Sandra and Glen Vande Lune of Summerville, Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband Ken, Virjean was preceded in death by her parents Lester and Bernadine Lund; and two grandsons, Aaron and Brady Touro.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 30, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. in the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa with Reverends Robert and Molly Goodrich officiating.
