Wilma  Hicks


Wilma Hicks, 91 of Oskaloosa and formerly New Sharon passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 22, 2019 at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home of New Sharon. Burial will be held in the Highland Cemetery in New Sharon. Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm Monday, May 27, 2019 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in New Sharon. Memorials may be made to the New Sharon Fire and Rescue or the MHP Hospice Serenity House. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of New Sharon is in charge of arrangements.

Wilma Kathleen Hicks, the daughter of Vernie and Sylvia (Wymore) Braden, was born on March 22, 1928 near Barnes City. She attended Sandridge and Riggs country schools near Barnes City. On November 11, 1946, Wilma was united in marriage to Nolen Hicks at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Terry, Sue and Randy. Wilma worked at Walmart, Casey's, Pella Products, New Sharon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and she also sold Stanley Home Products for nearly 42 years. Wilma was a member of the New Sharon First Christian Church, Sisters in Christ, the Loyal Daughters and the Rebekah Lodge where she was a Noble Grand. She enjoyed playing cards, attending dances when she was younger, cooking, being on the computer and above all spending time with her family.

Her legacy will be honored by her daughter, Sue (Jim) Stursma of New Sharon; a son, Randy Hicks of Oskaloosa; six grandchildren, Dawn (Paul) Hammock, Jami Schares, Jennifer Peters, Jodi (Scott) Barr, Dr. Joshuan Hicks and Colton Hicks; 11 great grandchildren, Kayla, Mason, Chase, Savanna, Conner, Carly, Dylan, Jake, Alex, Aubrey, Payton, Braden, Noah, Annika, Blaise and Harrison; 1 great-great grandson, Wyatt; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Farrington Hagist of Montezuma and other nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nolen Hicks; a son, Terry Hicks; two grandchildren, Shawna Hicks and Jeremiah Hicks; three brothers, Harlan Braden, Melvin Braden and Elvin Braden; four sisters, Jessie McMahan, Lola Knudson, Eileen Howard and Treva Felton.
