Carol Joan Blackwell Hicks
Carol "Joan" Blackwell Hicks, 80, formerly of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on February 4, 2020, in Henderson, Nevada. Joan was born on February 22, 1939 in Bloomfield, Iowa, second daughter of Grant Wilson Blackwell and Helen (Carlson) Blackwell. She graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1956, and married Paul Dean Hicks of Memphis, Missouri in September of 1958. They moved to Oskaloosa in 1964 where they both worked for Hy-Vee Food Store. Joan loved her card club, JC's and bowling group. Her happiest moments were spent in the kitchen making goodies for her family and friends. Joan and Dean moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in July 1989 to enjoy a warmer climate. Although Joan missed her cherished Iowa friends and family, she enjoyed her new community. She was employed at the Bellagio Resort and was awarded several Special Recognition Service Awards. After retirement, Joan worked with her son Scot at Chevron, where she was known to take holiday and weekend shifts for coworkers with children.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Stepmother Dorothy Blackwell, son Jeffrey, nephew Eric Cohrt, brothers- in-law Vince McCarthy and Darwin Cohrt, and sister-in-law Kathy Blackwell. She is survived by three sons, Rodney (Diane) of Oskaloosa, IA, Michael (Lisa) of Alamo, CA, and Scot Hicks of Henderson, NV, daughter-in-law, Leslie Driscoll Hicks of Bozeman, MT, siblings, Sandy McCarthy of Overland Park, KS, Bob Blackwell (Linda) of Ottumwa, IA, Linda Cohrt of Oskaloosa, IA, Nancy Cantrell (Rollie) of Marion, IA, her grandchildren, Grant (Brittany) Hicks of Prairie City, IA, Jason Hicks of Oskaloosa, IA, Joel (Chelsea) Hicks of Maple Grove, MN, Isabelle (Michael) Alexander of Walnut Creek, CA, and Caroline Hicks of Alamo, CA, two step-grandchildren, Kara Willimack of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Mason Fillmore of Alexandria, VA, two great grandchildren, Lauren and Oliver Hicks, step-greatgrandchild, Brantley Willimack, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be held February 22, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa. Donations may be made to the Barker Cemetery, Carol Joan Blackwell Hicks Memorial Fund, 13822 Blessing Dr, Downing, MO 63536.
